Everyone feels anxious time and again. After all, it is a natural response to stressful or uncertain situations. However, anxiety that persists or has a negative effect on your life can be really unpleasant and, if left untreated, can cause all sorts of health problems- both mental and physical. Green Dog Dental has some tips to help with anxiety.
Anxiety is Just as Bad for Dogs
Anxiety can be just as debilitating for pets as it can for people. While the issues that make pets anxious are different from those that plague human beings (at least most of the time) the physical and psychological effects are remarkably similar. Animals and people that feel anxious may experience:
- Feelings of irritability
- heightened alertness
- problems with sleep
- changes in appetite
How to Treat Anxiety
Human beings have all sorts of ways to combat anxiety, from meditation to medication. Pets, however, are often reliant on their owners to identify the issue and, since they can’t tell us what the problem is, the anxiety can go untreated for quite some time. With animals, anxiety is treated in three basic ways: holistic treatment, training, and medication.
There is More Than Medication
With severe anxiety, or anxiety that presents as aggression, medication is often the first step that vets will recommend, and with good reason! But not all pets need medication, and many will benefit from training, behavior modification, and holistic treatments.
Triggers for Anxiety
Lots of pets experience situational anxiety, or nervousness brought on by specific situations. These dogs are often cheerful and worry-free otherwise but tense up when faced with a specific trigger. Common triggers for situation anxiety are thunderstorms, trips to the vet, fireworks, and car rides. Other pets suffer from separation anxiety. At its worst, separation anxiety can be extremely debilitating and can lead to physical injury (some pets will do anything, including harming themselves, to escape confinement to join their humans). But milder forms of separation anxiety can often be treated holistically and with training.
