Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world and we see a lot of them at Green Dog Dental. And it’s no wonder! With their fun-loving antics, good looks, intelligence, and sweet disposition, they really are one of the shining stars of the canine world. They’re pretty close to perfection, but they certainly aren’t for everyone. Here are 5 things you should know about Golden Retrievers.
They’re Scottish!
While they may seem like the all-American dog, these golden beauties actually hail from the United Kingdom, where they were originally bred to retrieve shot waterfowl, like ducks and grouse. They can trace their origins to the 19th century and were the preferred hunting dog for the Scottish nobility, who needed a capable retriever to help them during their hunting parties.
They Love Training
They’re extremely trainable. Golden Retrievers are that magic combination of smart and eager to please, but they aren’t born fully trained. Just like any dog, they’ll need training and socialization to meet their full potential. Luckily, you couldn’t find a better student!
These Are Active Dogs
They aren’t couch potatoes. True to their hunting dog origins, Golden Retrievers need and love a lot of exercise. In fact, many first-time Golden Retriever owners are surprised at how much energy they have, especially when they’re young. They make fabulous pets but need a good deal of exercise in order to be happy, healthy, and well behaved.
Not A Guard Dog
They won’t replace your security system. Golden Retrievers will likely bark when someone approaches your home, but don’t count on them to scare away burglars. Due to their uber friendly personalities, they’re more likely to offer intruders a spot of tea than chase them away.
Most Dynamic Breed!
They are one of the most dynamic dog breeds in the world. From therapy work, search and rescue, guiding eyes for the blind, and making an amazing family pet, Golden Retrievers are an incredibly versatile breed. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find many Goldens who are still out hunting in the fields. While that was their original purpose, they’re so multitalented that they excel in nearly every dog sport as well as a variety of working-dog positions.
